When you think of successful people, what are the first thoughts that come into your mind regarding how that person got to where they are? High level education? Hard work or business savvy? Or maybe even a prominent upbringing or the right connections? We don’t always consider a key element that plays a major role in determining one’s success: a person’s mindset and view of life. A simple change of perspective can completely alter a person’s level of success. One of the greatest examples of this is our perspective on money and opportunity. When it comes to thought patterns about money there are two that prevail.
Most individuals either have an abundance mentality or a scarcity mentality. The difference between these two thoughts can determine not only your level of wealth, but also the joy you experience on your path to wealth. Individuals with a scarcity mentality believe that there is a limited amount of wealth and opportunity that exists. Individuals with an abundance mentality believe that opportunity will always exist and when they help others achieve their goals of wealth, more opportunity will be created for all.
An easy way to visualize this is to think of a pie. The scarcity mentality would be very upset when a piece of pie is taken and not put on their plate. This is because they believe that with each piece taken there is less for them. The opposite is true with an abundance mentality. They believe that when a piece of pie is taken it will only encourage the creation of more pies.
It is human nature to struggle with this concept. From the time we were born we fought over a sibling or friend getting something that was “ours”. Wealth is not a limited resource. Wealth is created in our minds by our thoughts and imagination. Products and ideas are birthed every day that create millions of dollars for the person that imagined it.
When you help others achieve their goals and dreams you are not limiting your amount of wealth. Instead, you are increasing your potential to earn more! As those you help become more successful there will be opportunities that arise (more pie) that you wouldn’t have experienced without them. Zig Ziglar, one of the greatest motivational speakers of our day, said, “You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.”
Having an abundance mentality brings more joy to your life. Seeing those around you experience greater wealth and success because you were willing to give, will allow you to experience more fulfillment in life, and as the quote above says, “everything you want”!
How has having the scarcity mentality or the abundance mentality affected your decisions in business and in life? What are some ways that you can begin to change your perspective to increase your success? Leave a reply below with your thoughts.
