Are you reasonable? Do you always go with the flow? Many people go through life simply doing what they see others do. They make decisions based off the opinions of others. They follow the footsteps of those before them. Is this you?
George Bernard Shaw, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925, says it best:
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress relies on the unreasonable man.”
I often frustrate those around me, especially my wife! I have been called hard headed and unreasonable. While I recognize these are not always looked upon as desirable characteristics, in many circumstances these can be positive traits. True progress comes from those that think differently. It is driven by those that refuse to except the norm and instead pursue finding ways to make the world adapt to them. Within my business we have always strived to find new ways to do things and to think outside the box.
While we certainly study and learn from the business methods and ideas of the past, we seldom emulate anyone. We agree upon a desired outcome and then work backwards on how we will achieve it.
So, have you been unreasonable lately? Have those around you thought your ideas were crazy? Have you created a stir in your business or your life? Have you decided to be you and found ways to make the world adapt to who you are? If the answer to these questions is NO then it’s time to make a change. The world needs people that think differently and are not afraid to take chances. If you want to do great things with your life I believe that being a little unreasonable is a key ingredient. So, take the challenge to dream bigger than reason would allow and practice being you in a world of conformity.
What ideas or dreams have you let go of because they didn’t seem reasonable?
