Have you taken time to review your goals from last year? How many of them did you accomplish? If you’re like most people you have probably accomplished the easier goals or at least the ones that you enjoy working on. What about the goals that you didn’t accomplish? How do you eliminate this continual short falling on accomplishing what you want?
Maybe the best answer to this question is a history lesson. After coming ashore with his army, the sixteenth-century Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes would order to have all of their boats burned. This sent a message to his army that they would either win the battle or die trying, there was no turning back and retreat was not an option.
When you study individuals that have accomplished great levels of success, many share a common thread. They gave themselves no escape route. All too often we set goals and plan for success while still holding on to a safety net. This safety net should be called a “hinder net” as all it does is hinder you from reaching your dreams. When you allow for an escape route or a safety net, the first time you experience adversity you will be reminded that you don’t have to keep pushing forward. Trust me, when you set out to do and accomplish big things, YOU WILL BE HIT WITH ADVERSITY! When adversity hits and you have nowhere to go but through it, you find a way to succeed were you never thought possible.
I remember when I decided to start Foundation Companies. I was selling real estate and had gone from possibly the best real estate market in history, to the worst real estate crash in history. It was very difficult to make a sale and I was living off of credit lines. I had a choice to make. I could either limp along and sell real estate and make ends meet until something stabilized in the market or I could go for my dream. Going for my dream got my vote! In order to do so I “burned the ships”! I remember spending nearly all of my savings on the education that I needed to make the proper decisions. I stopped selling real estate and made success my only option. When adversity hit I had no choice but to push on and figure out a way to succeed.
When making your goals this year, dream big! Identify the escape routes and safety nets in your life and “burn the ships”. Once you truly make success your only option you will be able to fully tackle adversity and stop running from it. This is the difference in setting goals and reaching them!
