Recently I was speaking with a gentleman who was adamantly telling me how he believed that “The sky’s the limit!” He gave all the great one liners about success, but what struck me as odd was that most of what he said did not line up with his actions. Even though he said all the right things, the reality is that he has worked the same unsatisfying mid-level job for over 20 years, has taken little to know risk and is for all practical purposes a follower.
We all know this person, the one that says one thing and does another. In fact, if we are honest there is probably an area in our own life where we are guilty of this. I know areas in my life where my actions don’t line up with what I say I believe. For example, I talk (and even blog) about the importance of regular exercise and healthy eating but I struggle with exercising on a regular basis and while I strive to eat healthy most of the time, sometimes it is all too easy to make the wrong choices.
OUR ACTIONS ARE A WINDOW INTO OUR BELIEFS
What I have come to realize is that even though we may think we believe something, if our actions do not line up with these thoughts or words then we truly do not believe it. We think we believe what we say, however putting these words to action requires two things.
RISK AND FAITH
These two words are what keep most of us from acting on what we say we believe. However, if we truly believe what we say then having faith is easy and the risk is nonexistent. If the gentleman I spoke with truly believed that the sky was the limit and that great opportunity was all around us, his actions would reflect this belief.
When our actions line up with our beliefs it shows our faith, and when we truly believe in something, the risk is minimal. The lack of action shows just the opposite: lack of faith and fear of risk.
