“You will become a product of your environment!”
How many times did you hear this growing up? You may even use this quote with your own kids. Lord knows I have heard it more times than I can count.
What our parents, grandparents, teachers and coaches have taught us is true, but not just for our youth. Some of the most important decisions you will make as an adult are in direct correlation with this quote. These decisions are People Decisions.
People Decisions are by far the most impactful decisions I have made. They can be broken down into 4 basic categories and if you are intentional in each area the result can be dramatic!
I understand that I may get some disagreement on this; however, who we choose to love is just that, a choice. I am not talking about the family we are born into, I am referring to the spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend that you choose. Some would argue that there is a perfect person for each of us and that we can’t choose who we love. If this were true, it would only take one person to make a mistake and choose the wrong person and the entire system would be broken. Aside from God, I owe as much credit for my success to my wife as anyone! She is extremely supportive, trusting and lets me run my business without constant interference. If I had chosen a different wife, one that didn’t trust me, or questioned everything I did we would not have experienced the same levels of success. Choose wisely!
Too often we enter into friendships by default, simply because of convenience. Too often, these friendships are more destructive than beneficial. It is extremely important to find friends that help and support you. Friends that share in your faith and that bring encouragement to your life, not drama. Choosing the wrong friends has been the demise of many and not just the younger crowd!
I could write a chapter on this one. Employers: take time to hire the correct people! Your decisions in who you hire can make or break your business. I have learned the hard way to take my time when hiring. The same goes with finding an employer. If you are looking for a job, do not just choose the highest paying company. The culture and beliefs of your employer can make your job a pleasure or a nightmare! When hiring, I have found that how the potential hire fits into our culture is as important as the skill set they bring. When you hire people who fit your culture and values it creates a refreshing level of trust between you and your employees.
I often write about the need for a mentor. Finding the correct mentor can make a huge difference in your life! Do not just look for the richest man or woman in town, but find the person that most personifies who you want to be. For me wealth is a factor, but their walk with Christ, their family life and their time spent helping others is just as important to me as their business aptitude.
People Decisions are the most critical decisions you will make in your life! As my business partner often says, “Each person you get to know will shape and change you in some way.”
Take time to analyze who you surround yourself with. Make changes in areas that are toxic or have the potential to become toxic. Make sure you find the right employees or employer. Remember what your grandmother told you… you will become a product of your environment. The good news is you can control your environment if you choose! Will you?
