We all know the concept of keeping up with the Joneses and, at some level or another, we all compare our material things, experiences, knowledge, relationships and overall lives with each other. The introduction of Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media has only heightened our ability to compare our lives with more people on more levels. Facebook, also known as Bragbook, is often used as a highlight reel, only depicting the best things in our lives. It’s very easy to forget this when we compare our everyday lives to the highlights of others.
Many of us spend a great deal of time and energy trying to improve upon our weaknesses. We spend countless hours comparing ourselves to those around us and trying to become excellent in all areas of life. Rather than dwelling on our weaknesses, what if we began focusing on our strengths?
One of the greatest differences between mediocrity and success is where we place our focus. We are all born with, and continue to develop, talents throughout life. These are our strengths. Sometimes they are physical or intellectual attributes, while others are a part of our personality and demeanor. When we focus on our strengths, life becomes much more enjoyable!
Imagine a 6 foot 5 inch, 250 pound man who can lift heavy weights and has a competitive and somewhat aggressive personality. This guy would most likely enjoy and be well suited for playing football. However, he recognizes the fact that his weakness, physically, is long distance running, so he works daily at becoming a better runner. Sure, he improves in running, but never excels in this skill enough to do anything significant with it and is miserable trying. Now, if this man decided to focus on continually improving his strengths his chances of earning a football scholarship and even playing professionally would significantly increase. We all tend to love what we are good at so he would probably experience more enjoyment growing his natural abilities, not to mention the success he would gain from doing so.
The one thing you can do to bring about great success in your life is to focus on your strengths! When you improve upon what you are naturally strong in, you can reach levels of greatness that, in some cases, have never been reached before. As long as your weaknesses are not keeping you from being a better person or hindering your relationship with God then don’t waste your time on them. You will overcome them by surrounding yourself with those that have strengths where you are weak. A business person that is good at sales and big picture thinking would be better off hiring an accountant to keep the finances straight rather than trying to take their big picture mind and make it concentrate on the details of the books. At the end of the day you can either enjoy excellence in your areas of strength or mediocrity in everything else.
Simply put, have fun in life. Identify your strengths and concentrate on becoming the best in those areas! You will be amazed at the outcomes you’ll accomplish and the enjoyment you’ll find!
